The last few years have been great to me, as i was able to clobber the S&P500 many times in returns. But of course, you can't make a living trading the markets if you don't make great great returns. I'll try to give my readers trades that i think will make them money. However, you need to have money management skills, in order not to lose everything on a greedy or stupid trade. I may or may not already be in the trades i recommend. I may or may not trade the stocks i recommend. NUVO smackdown!

NUVO trading @ 4.18

The stock got slammed yesterday, losing $15 (about the price of a haircut? lol) because one of their drug studies with drug giant Bayer failed to meet expectations. Investors sold sold and then sold.

The company still has enough cash to last 2 years. Risk reward is good in my opinion. But it is speculative.

Intermediate to longer term play. Play small.

Beanie, do you see NUVO behaving similarly to ELN, last year? You made a call to buy ELN similarly last April when it got hammered about 80%. From 28 dollars to 4 dollars.

XNN: i think we'll get a rally tomorrow. Regarding earnings, no matter what happens (even if you feel it will gap up huge) it's just trading strategy to take some (like 1/2) off the table.

Remember the two big fools on the Deal Or No Deal show that i've mentioned on this blog? Besides considering the high probability of gains, don't ever forget to consider the risk.

NUVO: is NOT like ELN of last year. ELN was a good play (and I made all of my money last year on that stock) because Tysabri was a good drug that MS patients clamored for when it was yanked. NUVO has no such prospect. It might be able to come up with something for its pipeline, but it doesn't have the upside of ELN. It is just another biopharma company looking to get started (albeit with more cash).

The common thought for oil drilling revenues is not so much based on the expectantcy of higher oil prices but on the areana of rentals. It is safe to say than if one can find a company with a combination of both then there is double dip into the profits in the oil revenue based business. Oil drilling is a needed path to oil. Its like having our cake and eating it too.

DO is engaged in this endevor and its primay base contraccting out its drilling rigs.

OMNI is another and I mention it because it is flush with numerous

OMNI Energy Services Corp. operates as an integrated oilfield service company in the United States. It operates in two divisions, Seismic Drilling and Environmental Services. The Seismic Drilling division principally operates in the marsh, swamp, shallow water, and contiguous dry land areas along the Gulf Coast, primarily in Louisiana and Texas. It also owns and operates a fleet of seismic drilling and transportation equipment to provide a range of seismic drilling, permitting, and survey services. The Environmental Services division provides dock-side, and offshore hazardous and nonhazardous oilfield waste management; and environmental cleaning services, including drilling rig, tank and vessel cleaning, safe vessel entry, naturally occurring radioactive material decontamination, platform abandonment services, pipeline flushing, gas dehydration, and hydro blasting. The company also offers rental equipment and specialized environmental services principally to drilling contractors operating in the Gulf of Mexico. It provides a fleet of rental equipment, including pressure washers, reverse osmosis machines, and steam cleaners; and wellhead installation, stress relieving services, and environmental pit cleaning services to drilling contractors.

More for your money. Well diversified. YOY QTLY is 3 times that of DO.

Bottom line is, either way, next year will be a profit for both companies and stockholders.

My personal suggestion is:
1) NO MORE THAN 5% of your porfolio (no margin) in speculative stocks.
2)If you are confident in a speculative stock, do dollar cost averaging UP.
3) Always have a bracket order (Profit target and stop limit) for each speculative stock.
4) Keep an eye on the overall market. 75% of the stocks follow the overall market.
5) Take care of the losses and the profits will come.

Todd,

your average price of 3.50 for XNN is too high. You don't have much leeway if the stock sells off after earnings. You are too late to the party, up to earnings. I would only have the guts to hold thru earnings if i bought under $3 and if i sold 1/2 already.

If i were in your situation i would probably get out of XNN altogether, or keep only a small position.

i know i know, you gonna hate me if the stock gaps up over $1 thursday morning.

Intermediate to longer term i believe XNN is headed higher. If you are planning to hold that long, then by all means keep a bigger position. You better be patient though if XNN doesn't go your way on thursday.

I made the recommendation because i thought it has huge potential as a company. By completely leaving the stock, i won't be able enjoy any continued gains. I'll probably put back on a smaller position tomorrow.

Beanie,
As far as NUVO is concerned (I took a smallish position at 4.21) - is the fact that Bayer will likely terminate their deal with NUVO already completely priced in? Are you looking for a short term bounce to sell? My thinking is that I'll sell at least half if there's any sort of compelling move up tomorrow, and then hold a tiny position intermediate term.

I bought in as I like the cash/debt that the company carries, and I am now also told by friends in the medical field that the NUVO preclinical drugs are quite exciting and based on these, the stock is more valuable than current levels. The stock is clearly oversold and should be trading higher than this -- though I have a sense that it will be a bit of a choppy ride.

thanks for alerting us to this one -I hope to hear more of your thoughts about it.

I would like to sell those 3K shares at the peak (obviously), but nervous holding to long into the day tomorrow. I fear that a lot of investors will want to sell before the close and cause the stock to decline quickly. If this might happen, what hour??? I plan to hold 1K through earnings that I bought at 2.70 (crossed fingers).

For the longer term, I like EBAY because it has zero competition. I like NYX for the same reason, no competition. GS is top notch in the financial sector. To get exposure to tech, i like my top 3 horsemen - GOOG, AAPL, AKAM.

You know where the hot trend is right now (technology for the couch potato)? High-definition is hot! That means these 3 will benefit: CMCSK, DISH, DTV.

I want you folks to realize that biotech plays are very risky. Take a look at RNVS and NUVO if you don't believe. They can lose up to 80% of their value in just a single day if something goes wrong. And this happens to biotech stocks all the time. How often do you see this kind of tankage in other sectors? Very rare.

Biotechs are not for the faint of heart. In fact, most often times i feel that biotechs are a real scam sector that keeps on sucking people's hard earned dollars with their big promises of saving lives and improving humanity. Finding the next AMGN, DNA, MRK, PFE, or CELG is nearly impossible and there are only few (very very few because i can only name 5 quickly) eventual superstars.
