The last few years have been great to me, as i was able to clobber the S&P500 many times in returns. But of course, you can't make a living trading the markets if you don't make great great returns. I'll try to give my readers trades that i think will make them money. However, you need to have money management skills, in order not to lose everything on a greedy or stupid trade. I may or may not already be in the trades i recommend. I may or may not trade the stocks i recommend. Due diligence is required on your part and the usual disclaimer that i am not responsible for your losses always apply. ATHR chips ahoy!!!

ATHR closed @ 22.21

Atheros makes chips for wireless infrastructure. It is a nimble competitor of bigger outfits like Broadcom and Marvell. ATHR is growing very fast and is still a relatively small company.

The charts are saying it's going higher, likely starting Friday.

Short/intermediate/longer term play.

Sonic Foundry, Inc. is in the business of developing complete, economical, timesaving and easy-to-use solutions for one-to-many communications (our "Rich Media" business). The Rich Media business was formed in October 2001, when our wholly-owned subsidiary, Sonic Foundry Systems Group, Inc. acquired the assets and assumed certain liabilities of Mediasite, Inc. Our internally developed software code, coupled with our acquired systems technology, includes advanced publishing tools and media access technologies operating across multiple digital delivery platforms to significantly enhance a host of enterprise-based media applications. Our solutions are based on unique technologies that enhance media communications through the extensive use of rich media, defined as a media element that combines graphics, text, video, audio and metadata in a single data file. Our technology evolved from a four-year Carnegie Mellon University research effort funded by major government (DARPA, NSF, NASA) and private organizations (CNN, Intel, Boeing, Microsoft, Motorola, Bell Atlantic). ATHR- a quick glance on the chart and financials certainly shows potential for longer term growth. If I had enough money I would have chosen this one as one of my long term hold. Last Qtr. reported revenue 74% increase and 194% earnings growth.

Beanie,
I bought ZVUE (I'm embarassed to say it), at just under 6.00. I'd actually like to get out of it and take the loss. Luckily, I didn't buy that much . How would you trade it today? Look for another spike early in the day? The traders are all over this one, and I would expect it to surge until about 10:30, level off before sinking at the end of the day -- (I state this based purely on past observation). Would you agree?

Neil,
I just bought some today at 4.60, if you cannot unload it today at very close to cost, be patient I think the
excitement is coming back again. Hold it for awhile, it should go up soon close to 6-7 (not today, maybe a few days or so).

Fri Dec 15, 09:54:00 AM EST
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks SGV. I actually got rid of most of what I was holding at 4.55. This one's a bit too volatile for me. As I anticipate spending more time at work going forward (even through the holidays), I'm going to have less and less time to trade and will need to move my money into long-term equities now.

Fri Dec 15, 10:08:00 AM EST
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Neil,
Over the years, my investment strategy is really simple, I alocate 70-80 for long term, and play 20-30% on short term/ speculative play. I only hold xnn, zvue and forg as high risk/reward and still holding rvbd, divx, smsi, and dtv as my long term. I'll buy whenever I think it's low enough and sell only when it's really high- I did that buy and sell strategy with RVBD and DIVX and I made over 4K in 3months. I only bought 350 shares of ZVUE at 4.60 and will hold it for a few days to a few weeks and see how far it goes.
I think next year will be another good year for stock trading. Good luck today!

I did unload all except 200 shares of XNN I bought for 2.61. Sold 900 shares when it went down from 4.o to 3.60.
When I posted ZVUE "losing steam" warning, I unloaded at 6.90 long time ago. Right now there are more seller than buyers for ZVUE. The media revolution is still growing. ZVUE will come back. I will be holding my 350 shares for longer term. I am an experienced gambler- sooner or later the odds catch up on you. Try to control your "irrational exuberance" to get better of you. Easier said than done ,of course but you have to formulate your own investment strategy and work within or else you just compound your losses by making bad choices. Even Beanie does not have a crystal ball, so if you're not winning, cut your losses for now and
prepare for your next buy, do your research and plan your buy-how many and how much you can risk. I feel your pain and frustration. Hang in there and hope you get better. You cannot get lucky all time- but you can get better.

Remember the news said "it received clearance from FDA" -it's a positive news but not really big news. It could be just over-reaction and you could lose a lot at end of the day. But who really knows?

ZVUE: i still believe it has very good long term potential. Most of you who bought where i recommended it should've made a huge profit. I hope you kept some free shares and move on. Whenever a stock goes up over 100% in a matter of days, you ought to know that it's immediate/short term overbought. Traders will lock in profits and it creates a cascading effect of selling. Most money managers are happy with 15% gain for the year! If a stock is up over 50% in a few days, what are you waiting for? Take some off the table! Got it? Good.

XNN, i recommended it at 2.62 and when it went to $4 in less than 2 weeks. That's over 50% gain. The smart money would definately take at least 1/2 off the table. I don't understand why some folks still ended up buying at $4 and holding thru earnings. It just makes no sense. If you're late to the party, forgettaboutit and wait for the next train.

Cramer tells us to buy LMC, one of the few pure plays on ZINC.

We are quietly running out of ZINC. In three months, there will be a panic. LMC may tripple by then to $100.

HI everyone!
I couldn't stay away. As far as LMC is concerned, it's not a pure play Zinc co. ("Even the mid-tier, best zinc-leverage companies such as Lundin Mining and Kagara Zinc have significant byproduct credits that make them less than a pure play")

I am curious about this and will look into this over the weekend. I'd be interested in knowing what other regulars here think of this. Anyone out there with a bit more experience in mining stocks?

Sat Dec 16, 12:03:00 AM EST

By the way,
This is what Cramer said about LMC (he didn't reference Zinc at all in Mad Money -- I don't have access to the premium content, so I don't know what he might have said in those articles):
"Lundin Mining (LMC - news - Cramer's Take): "We have a steel deal going on and we have a copper deal going on. This is a terrific mineral play and will be on everyone's short list to be acquired."

Regarding IMMC, whenever i make calls that are not "official" recommendations, i'm basically shooting from the hip and it's meant for the daytraders. I usually haven't done much research on the stocks i haven't made an official call. That means you're kinda on your own if you choose to play it. These kinds of plays i usually get out really quick if they go against me.

IMMC will probably drop Monday but may come back several days later.

Unless you're a daytrader, please focus on the "official" picks as i usually have done decent amount of due diligence on them and feel they are safe enough for the longer term players.

Pamfla,
If you remember my post about IMMC by noon; I said "it already went up by 39%" and "it could be an over-reaction to the good news that was released" and I was really hesitant to buy in myself because I was just using margins. And I felt that you could lose money at the end of day. And if you did buy, you would lose money. BUT monday is a different day- it could rebound nicely-maybe enough to recoup your losses. I put my money on SOFO- bought 1000 shares at 4.50.
I shall sell immediately just to get a decent gains, even 10% will do. I do consider all Beanie's picks but would always zero in to one or two at a time. I do read charts, financial statements and trends but in the end it is the mood of market that will decide which one will take-off and which one will be ignored. I acquired 400 shares of ZVUE today at 4.34. I think the attraction is back to ZVUE and will likely slowly go up if not next week or shortly after. Good Luck Monday.

If you like zinc, you may want to try MMG, Metaline Metal Corp.

You know sometimes it's good to say, something like, "I was a little overzealous on that one." or "didn't get that one quite right, but this is what we should do from here." I ademire that! Admitting mistakes is a virtue in a leader. I know SGV is going to tell me not to show such disrespect and to go away, but that's how I feel. I'm not only speaking about XNN, but also IMMC.
SGV tells us to take our 10% and move on. Is this turning into a daytrader pump and dump site? I would like to know about some stocks that have potential for long term growth and not be told to dump them three days later. This one's going to be the next TASR. This one will hit the moon after it reaches 6. All of this sounds like pumping when we are told to dump it a few days later. Sorry to vent, but this is the way I feel.

THIS IS A TRADERS SITE.

THIS IS A TRADERS SITE. That includes all kind of trades - day trades, short term and long terms trades.
A lot of recommendations have very short term potential, but isn't that we all want - the next explosive opportunity?
If you scan through the archives, you will see that Beanie and others have consistently given long term recommendations -

New York Stock Exchange (NYX
Nasdaq (NDAQ)
Goldman Sachs (GS)
Apple (AAPL)
Dish & direct Tv (DISH, DTV)
Qualcomm (QCOM)
DELL
DIVX
CSCO
NVDA
EBAY
XMSR
YHOO

the list goes on and on. None of these were pump and dump schemes. If you are a long term trader only. There are more than sufficient opportunities out here.
You have to take your pick.

Anonymous,
If you're blaming Beanie for your losses and then actually suggesting that this is a pump and dump site, then with no disrespect intended, you shouldn't be trading stocks. Beanie is incredibly knowledgeable, and his success rate is amazing -- but at the end of the day, we are each responsible for our own trades.

I don't think that there is a pump and dump tone to discussions here -- but even if there were, then the goal would be to get on the ball and catch the momentum on the pumped stocks. The point is that there are lots of ideas floating around here--some long term, some short term. Use them, think about them, do your research and try to make money.

As far as criticizing goes-yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion and we all have the right to voice our respective views. However, given the fact that Beanie is providing this service for free, and that we come here of our own volition, I do think that he's entitled to a certain amount of respect (even if he were charging -- we would all presumably be here out of choice -- so the point would still hold). Given the nature of this site, I think that Beanie is free to do whatever he wants (even if it were to pump and dump - which he doesn't do) -- and we as readers don't really have any foot to stand on to critique him or to try to tell him what to do.

If anyone's interested--I've been following last week's IPO, Guidance Software (GUID). I "nibbled" at just under $17, but am waiting for the price to settle.
Here's some interesting reading about the company. I wonder if George Tenet will give the co. an inside track into govt. contracts

Let me start by saying IF I offended anyone; I apologies. BUT let me point out that I was misunderstood- 1. I never ask anybody to go away- when I post I ALWAYS use my name. 2.I never say "take your 10% and move on"- I said on my recent post that "I put my money on SOFO and I'd sell as soon as I see even 10-20% gains". 3. Let me point out that I on a few occasion would say "even Beanie does not have a crystal ball" or I even joke about his untimely advice to Chao to dump her present holdings for DTV . 4. When Beanie posted his opinion on list of stocks- I even posted my own thoughts on some them. When I disagree on a few of them- especially HANS- all of you agree with Beanie. My wish is I would like to have a free flow of ideas, and in the end we would learn to decide ourselves what to buy, when to buy and when to sell.
Let's not not ruin a good thing going here. I used to be just a long term hold guy. I only learn here how to do short term/day-trading from Beanie. If you guys read my post, I always frame my post on how I would do it. I usually shy away from advising people what to do unless, I really feel that one could benefit from my experience.
On the issue if this site is classic pump and dump. I think when Beanie post anything even close to a recommendation to buy, endorsement or "pump" a stock- everyone should do their own "DUE DELIGENCE". IF anyone is really reading my post as most recent one to PAMFLA- I said I would only "Zero in to one or two of Beanie's pick". And I don't want sound so smart here but I do always try to explain my point. Because I'm hoping that some might learn even on some of my mistakes and few good calls.
And in closing let me remind everyone that IF it is too easy to make money on trading stocks- then we would not have this "discussion".
IF I had found Beanie when he started day-trading long time ago, I would have made a lot of money by now.
Once again, let's all cool down and take it a little bit slow. We can learn from one another and we will make real good money here-- and hopefully have fun making it!! Now let me have my weekend back- because I am having a graduation party for my youngest daughter. GOOD TRADING EVERYONE!

I think we can all agree to just enjoy our weekend, let Beanie do his thing and to show our respect and goodwill most of all to him, but to each other as well. So as BEANIE WOULD SAY: "LET'S ROCK!!!!!!" :)

Now.....getting down to business: Look at the chart for BRKS -- breakout anyone? I'd like some feedback on this as I'm working on my charting skills.

ps. congrats to your daughter, sgv!

Hi Beanie and everyone ! I need your opinions about CORT if you have time , please ! CORT closed @ $0.88 on friday and insiders bought @$1.00 . It doesn't make any sense to me .

Anyone looking for long term picks, you cannot go wrong with these two:

1) Bear Stern (BSC)
2) ICICI Bank (IBN)

Sat Dec 16, 05:30:00 PM EST

CORT: Interesting one, this. They had three simultaneous Phase III trials on for their anti-psychotic drug CORLUX. The first two failed, and I'm guessing that the results of the third are due out soon.
The COO just left the company -- yet at the same time (and these are the insider transactions you referred to), the company managed to sell 3mil shares to private investors at $1. The co. has hardly any debt, somewhere between 12-15mil in cash and a float of 11 mil.
The third Phase III trial--from what little research I've undertaken--is bigger than the prior two trials and is being conducted in the US. I need to dig a little deeper to get the medical info behind this one.
So my opinion so far--which isn't really an opinion--is that if this last Phase III doesn't work out, then you can forget about this stock. They have nothing else in the pipeline. The only thing that makes it compelling is this private placement. I wonder what protection/insurance those insiders have if this doesn't work. My gut tells me that $3 mil. isn't that much.

I'd love to hear other opinions.

I'm procrastinating with my work by posting here! :( LOL.

I like IBN, but seeing that it's getting hammered on the SENSEX, I'm wondering what's propping it up here. It's trading near it's 52 week high -- my initial reaction would be to give it a couple days, to look for a dip before getting in. Anyone else agree?

IBN: just came out of a dip because of inflationary worries and the government asked all banks to keep more cash on hand. 15 points in 3 months. Outstanding climb... though it has begun decreasing in momentum since NOv 11th. Might be wise to wait....

i am still in the background reading your posts daily i think beanie is the master trader i am an accountant and for a lot of these companies there is no good reason to buy them from their financial records -- but you all know a lot more than me and yes i have made some money -- i believe beanie has stated his thoughts on whether each stock is for long term or short -- i think this board is really great because we can all post our thoughts and look at stocks from different viewpoints -- keep up the good work!!

Someone inquired about LMC (Vancouver-based Lundin Mining Co) as per the recent Cramer recommendation. I think it was Neil. I am no great admirer of Cramer, but have to agree with him on this one. This is actually my first post here on Beanie's blog, so I thought I would post my comments for what they are worth. I am a Canadian, but play both the Canadian and US markets equally. I have owned Google, Marvel, Celgene and Apple in the past and have done well. I still own Apple. On the Canadian side, I follow primarily the junior resource and mining stocks since these offer the greatest risk-reward. I listen to many mining analysts, prominent in Canada, especially on Report on Business TV. In my opinion, the three hottest metals right now are zinc, nickle, and uraninum. I quote from a recent outlook on 2007 Mining article which states that 'zinc is a commodity to watch going forward. The price of the metal used to galvanize steel has soared above $2 (U.S.) a pound on dwindling supplies. I think this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. Mining companies into base and precious metals are consolidating at a ferocious pace. The way to play this is to buy quality junior producers or those with or discovering significant deposits. These will be taken over, and this is where you stand to make good money in the intermediate or long term. And Beanie, thanks for getting me into MED, DTV, and XNN. I got out on XNN with a profit on Thursday as I could see this coming. Cheers!

Regarding IBN, here is one thing that the market loves - MONOPOLY (read CME). The 300 million middle class in India, is going to IBN for their car loans, home loans, personal loans. There is practically no competition for IBN.

OK, I'm the anonymous who vented. I appreciate anyone who is willing to help others. I think Beanie is legitimately trying to do that! At times, I think he feels compelled to do too much or answer too often. I saw one post 30 seconds after he had answered asking him where he was.
I guess it was a tough week for me last week. I hung with XNN (my fault) when I probably should have bailed. Hopefully it will recover some so I can recoup something.
Anyway thanks for the imput and responses from everyone.

Regarding XNN, I wouldn't sell if it went below 2.50. I would change my mind if it closed there on volume. Volume is everything. It came to 2.50 on heavy volume and held the Friday. If it sells on low volume I will think about it.
What do you think Beanie? Are you still holding any? Other people are encouraged to opine also
