The last few years have been great to me, as i was able to clobber the S&P500 many times in returns. But of course, you can't make a living trading the markets if you don't make great great returns. I'll try to give my readers trades that i think will make them money. However, you need to have money management skills, in order not to lose everything on a greedy or stupid trade. I may or may not already be in the trades i recommend. I may or may not trade the stocks i recommend. Due diligence is required on your part and the usual disclaimer that i am not responsible for your losses always apply. marktherat,
If I am caught in your position, I usually put sell limit orders on stocks about 1-2% above their present market value. For example, if I bought MGM this morning at 75 and it is at 73, I put in an order for 73.73.
This is just based on experience that the order will get executed 100% of the time.

i am thinking about moving from 100% stocks/0% bonds to 30% stocks/70% high-yield bonds

your opinions

is a 5-10% market correction right now imminent???

Fri Feb 09, 02:25:00 PM EST

thats a very good question, beanie even i would to know what you think. Should we reduce our allocation of stocks in our 401K

Fri Feb 09, 02:35:00 PM EST
Blogger gosu said...

As I said last week, validating beanie's comments on market crash..
As regards the crash, here is what I am looking at:
1) The major markets of the world:
HangSeng is at an all time high
Dow is at an all time high
German DAX is at its 7 year high
Chinese Composite is near all time high
Indian Sensex. is at an all time high
S&P is at its 7 year high
Nasdaq is near its 7 year high.
Japan Nikkei is near its 7 year high

I am not taking a contrarian view, but I think that all markets are due for a correction.

2) Chart Analysis:A simple chart analysis of the SPY and QQQQ for the last 5 years will tell you that they have been moving in an uptrending channel. If you draw a line at the tops and bottoms of the SPY and QQQQ, you will find that it now sitting at the top of that line.

The signal I am looking for is MST closing below 30.

Read Bulkowski and watch 60 minute charts along with the minute charts if daytrading and learn to look for patterns, trend lines, congestion areas and how the rises and falling of price almost always stop at candle tops/bottoms and/or the candle tails on the 60 minute charts...often to the penny. I've called trades to the penny for that reason alone. Observe and be studious. No need to respond...I'm out.

i'm never going to be able to live this one down,...but as mentioned, we all do make mistakes. if you have a better plan for how i can make a very good return with only 25k, be my guest.....in order to have quick returns you need to be able to buy 500 or 1000 shares of a stock...and unless you are buying 5 dollar stocks, 25k is not going to get you very much diversity.........if i want to buy a stock that is 100/share i don't think it makes sense to buy only a few shares because at the end of the day, what can i make, 100 or 200 bucks? i want to get in and out fast (hopefully with a gain) and i don't see any way to do that with just 25k and no margin....... not when it comes to daytrading at least....now long term investing is another story, diversity is definitely key......just my opinion of course, feel free to disagree and/or enlighten me.

i do the same thing as you and go 100% in a stock so i can make a quick profit. I am up 16% so far this year. Unfortunately i am limited in what i can do though since i don't have 25k in my account so i can't be a true daytrader

Oh yes, we need to get on his ass. Its for his benefit.
Mark was warned several times by beanie before market open at 9:10 AM and then at 9:20 AM, NOT to buy too much on margin, but still he did.
The basics of daytrading is risk management.
1) If you cannot keep a close eye on the market the whole day, or atleast when you have open positions, then do not day trade. You can definitely buy for the long term. For example, you wanted to buy on dips, for the long term, MA, and you have 25K in your cash account, you should buy 50 stocks of MA at 103.
2) For daytrading, keep an eye on mood of the market. Never fight the market.
3) Know some basic technical analysis, bollinger bands, EMA and SMA.
When you bought MA, it had dipped just below its 50 day MA, and below its lower bollinger band. The technical analysis is not perfect, but it will tell you that this is NOT the perfect time to buy for daytrading.
Yahoo finance will give you free basic technical analysis.
Example,
click here for basic MA technical analysis. But ofcourse, do not trade strictly off basic TA.
4) Lastly, never ever day trade on 100% margin. Never have more than 25% of your cash position of your portfolio in one stock.

Mark, gosu has some very good advice below.

since you have been so honest about your position and your cash balance i'll tell you what i do. i work full time too, with limited time to look at the market. i know that i have limited time so i do not day trade since i cannot. i am a swing trader. i buy a stock and hold it for 3-10 days, sometime a month. you think 25K is less, how about you try my 6K, yes thats right, i have only 6K, with margin i can buy stocks worth 12K for delivery. I started this year with 4K and in 5 weeks I've made 2K and am very happy with it, my goal was to double my money by end of the year and looks like I'm on track. I read this blog cause i like the people here, they seem sensible and i learn some thing new every day. someday i hope to save 100K so that i can start daytrading. till then i have come to terms with my limitations and am very happy with what i can do. i would suggest that you do the same. there is no path to making quick money, you cannot day trade if you cannot keep your fingure on the pulse of the mkt. as you have seen your position can change in a min, and if you dont have the ability to react you have no business being a day trader. second PLEASE KEEP A LOG OF YOUR TRADES AND LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. i feel like we can learn together if you like we can continue this by email you can write to me at desihoon_75@yahoo.com it will be fun learning together as long as you are willing to practice the right techniques and take time to develop the right habbits. as gosu said you were given a lot of warnings but you didnt head to them, so your loss yesterday was your fault and your biggest mistake that i've noticed in the past few days YOU ARE VERY IMPATIENT.

so thats my take, sorry for the long boring letter rest of the gang. i'll be more than happy to correspond with anyone who can contribute possitively to my learning experience, share with me his/her mistakes, hell ill be more than happy to take on a mentor. my goal is to become a FINANCIAL INVESTER (dont like the term trader) in 5 yrs. till then i have time to observe and learn the mkt, build some capital and most importantly learn TA.

I'm new here, and I'd like to tell you my story and seek the board's input.

I roughly '01 i had 18k to my name. On a whim I bought 2000 shares of YHOO. I held it until it hit 50 and sold it. Then I had 100k. It took 18 months. Then I started learning more. I made a lot of mistakes including buying LU from $4 to $1.8/ share, averaging down. I turned the 100k into 60k! Sweet, eh? I vowed to learn more.

I found friends who were successful and started finding stock blogs like this one. I started learning RSI, OBV, moving averages and channels. I bought a few stocks that quickly doubled. That's 120k.

I have an MBA and know hoe to look and fundementals, but I learned that the market does not necessarily value fundementals alone. It is a combo of fundis and techies. That's how I am doing it. Good companies with a good opportunity.

Anyway, I then made a calculated risk. Because I had a great job and low cost of living I could afford to take 100k in home equity and invest it. Before you freak out, my home is nearly paid off and even with the 100k I am at 66% equity. I am not worried about even the biggest housing correction.

Last year I lost my job and since then, have been trading full time. I usually buy and hold for weeks or longer. BUT I stream all of my stocks and about 100 others to look for trends and protect my profits.

That's 220k in the market. I had 100% moving since 1/1/07. On Friday I got spooked, sold everything, and am in 100% cash with 37k in profit.

That's 257k in an etrade account.

I am also learning about options and shorting. I feel that this will be the key to my success over the next year, as things feel very toppy to me. I want to capture any value on the downside too.

I am very cautious about this, and do not run into things quickly. I would welcome your input on how i can learn about these topics. Also,
I am looking for 5 - 10 stocks that have the potential to yield 10% or more over the next few months. I am not opposed to another YHOO though!

Thanks,

JC

Alright JC i like your story a lot. i have an MBA too, i dont do fundamental analysis anymore, i found that it did not help me much. now i just invest in good names that provide me with good techincal entry points. every weekend i sort through 150 stocks, i keep adding to that list. i think soon i'll top it at 200 and that will be it. this process takes me about 2.5 hrs but i like this time.

Some names that can share with you that could give you your 10% if you enter at the right price are
AMGN, AMR (when oil starts to decline this will shoot up), ARRS, ATI, CAL (same as AMR), GILD, HANS, ICON, ISRG, MIDD, QSII (wait for pullback is happening right now get in when this starts to move up), RIMM. some international stocks for you INFY, SAY, CTSH, IBN

LOL thats a lot right, i havent reached Z yet, i'm still working my list so i'll have to stop at R, I hope this helps you. also if you write to me at desihoon_75@yahoo.com we can exchange stories. i started investing in 03 and made huge HUGE mistakes now i'm rebounding. in AUG 06 my profolio had gone down to 2K (SOB!!!), now i'm applying all the new found knowledge that i've acquired through reading books and listening to CD's and turned it to 6K.

gosu/alok, everyone else,
thanks for the words of advice...i do appreciate it.

gosu, you are right about technical analysis (which I still do need to learn)....but I still think my trade was a good one, although i timed it very poorly. i knew there would be a short cover rally at the end of the day (unfortunately that 3:30 thing screwed me up bigtime...but it is my own fault). I would have made 1500 on MA yesterday if i held my trade until the actual short cover rally......was it the best and most intelligent trade i could have made yesterday, OF COURSE NOT :) no argument there...but i still think it was a good (although very risky) trade.... my opinion (although please tell me if i am wrong) is that on a day when a stock is TANKING bigtime, i believe that technical analysis is just about slim to none in terms of how helpful it is......

Alok/JC, thanks for your stories :) and alok, you are right, i am very impatient (partly because i'm often using heavy margin)....i need to work on that. if you want to email me you can email me at MarkTheRat@gmail.com :)

Absolutely nothing
So, call me selfish bastard, I would call myself practical. And no, I am not joking. When it comes to money, I am never joking.
How was I able to offset 3 dollar gas for the past 3 years? - I bought Exxon Mobil, Conoco Philips and Halliburton in 2001.
When John snow, former CEO of CSX became treasury secretary in 2004, I bought CSX at 14 and sold in 2006 at 36.
When Hank Paulson, former chairman of Goldman Sachs became treasury secretary in June 2006, I bought GS at 152 and sold at 215 last week.
Keep your eyes and ears open and you shall make money. Try to fight the markets and the government, you will be crushed.

You realize, of course, all Southerners are not southerners(sic). You know, in the way that you and a lot of pompous and somewhat ignorant "non-Southerners" would make us out to be with sweeping generalizations such as that.

I did serve 22 years in the Army though and it's very likely that people like you would assume it was because I needed a job as opposed to any idealistic or some other more honorable reason. It's all good though because sometimes I have simple-minded lapses in intelligent and rational judgment such as the assumption that you are rather ignorant based on a single statement and you really may or may not be that stupid after all.

I can think of a thousand things that happen from some idiot up North, or California that would not cause me to categorically trash a whole region of the country...a region that most Northerners are migrating too BTW. Your statment is ignorant; no more, no less. I've been to 40 states an maybe 15 coutries. I speak flutent German and have worked directly for several high ranking General officers including General Franks, in Korea. I even attained a degree while defending your freedom to be ignorant. I don't believe in what the Dixie Chicks believe or how they conveyed it. Has nothing to do with my NC roots. Has to do with my beliefs though whether you think they were geographically or environmentally conditioned or not. I have genrally found that the most ignorant and profoundly unaware folks...about the real world, that is, are from California and New England for what that's worth. I have also found that there is no particular region that much stupider than another but, of course, if you throw in the accent, it may seem that way to some.....some whom are not very wordly and really not all that knowledgable. BTW, I know some Southerners that know how to spell "ostacise." Maybe you should have gone to a nice school such as Duke, etc....LOL
